Premiere of Jewish Proverbs

Premiere of Jewish Proverbs

The first complete performance of Daniel Nelson’s Jewish Proverbs will take place on Monday 22 September, 2014, in the Grünewaldssal of the Stockholm Concert House. It will be premiered by the ZilliacusPerssonRaitinen string trio to whom it is also dedicated.
Jewish Proverbs is comprised of ten short movements which have their programmatic origin in different humoristic proverbs from Yiddish folklore. Simultaneously, each movement is written in memory of a separate antisemitic incident in history, ranging from the earliest pogrom ever recorded, in ancient Egypt, (the Alexandrian Riots, 38 CE) to the murder of four people at the Jewish Museum in Brussels, Belgium in May, 2014.

Review of Analytic Tales of Mechanical Movement

Review of Analytic Tales of Mechanical Movement

A review of the Uppsala Chamber Orchestra’s recent performance of Analytic Tales of Mechanical Movement, a concerto for double bass and string orchestra, from Uppsala Nya Tidning.

“But in the concert’s second work, Daniel Nelson’s brand new concerto for double bass and string orchestra, we were brought into a world of creative imagination in which the listener must be co-creative. The tension between play or fantasy objects and the mechanics that drive them required both contrast and interaction between soloist and orchestra. Glissandi, harmonics, and “slap-effects” of the strings against the fingerboard were some of the effects the soloist/orchestra performed. All four movements were brilliant, both in composition and execution. I liked the third movement best, The scribe in the forbidden city, wherein the orchestra’s delicate, breathless sound was complemented by a more introspective and sad recitative [in the solo part], presented ever higher and higher in pitch, interwoven with [orchestral] string chords. Ulla Ryman interpreted the difficult solo part -for a seemingly most unwieldy instruments as the double bass- in a dazzling elegant and expressive way. The soloist, conductor, and composer received a deservedly lengthy acknowledgement  from the audience. The [double bass] concerto was undoubtedly the most stimulating work of the concert.”

Analytic Tales of Mechanical Movement

Analytic Tales of Mechanical Movement

On Thursday April 10, double bassist Ulla Ryman will join with conductor Staffan Larson and the Uppsala Chamber Orchestra to perform Daniel Nelson’s Analytic Tales of Mechnical Movement. This concerto for double bass and string orchestra is a four movement ode to mechanical toys and other self-operating automata which move without the use of electricity, being powered instead by inner clockwork and relying on the interplay of cogs, wheels, weights and springs for their mechanical movement.
